NOSHOW Catwalk

Yesterday was the day of the Bournemouth catwalk - NOSHOW. My collection walked as did many others of men's, woman's and childrenswear. I have taken images of my collection being walked by the cutest of children. They were absolutely amazing and I'm so thankful to them for rocking my collection in style!

The Textile Institute: Everything You Need To Know About Childrenswear

Yesterday I went to LCF in Holborn to watch a lecture on childrenswear. It was so inspiring and helpful to hear experts talk about the industry. As a designer it was great to hear about the what not's in designing for children and the chemicals that can go into a product. Alot of the what not's seemed a bit extreme but at the same time completely understandable. For example: Hoods can be too large because if a child was to fall asleep wearing the garment the hood to fall down there face and suffocate them. So now hoods must be lined in breathable fabric to prevent this. Something I wouldn't of thought about but now after this lecture its given me a new understanding of design.
The most inspiring talks was from the company director of Skew. Skew are a company that focus on the entertainment business for the worlds favourite media companies. As someone that uses print and illustration in my projects this became really helpful to me and opened my eyes to another side to design. I've been reading there blog and have found some fantastic art on there from many artist and creators. Here are a few that made me chuckle:

Branding..

Yesterday I spent the day stitching my business cards. I used skin colour cotton and embroidery thread to create my characters. Then white linen and actuate, with my contact details on, and zig zag stitch to attach onto the cotton. I decided to create a business card that would stand out and what people/companies would remember and cherish. I feel these tick all these boxes. Yes they may not be practical but its more important to me to have a creative business card that stand out, which will be remembered. The only problem is that they take forever to make and I'm not sure i have the time to create them =( I will see what my course leader says about them then come up with a solution.

Let me know what you think =)

I also drew a few designs for packaging. I really like the long rectangle bag with "Sarahsaurus" written in large across the bag with the box which has the "Sarahsaurus" written on the right hand corner. The brand name will be raised on both the bag and box in each seasons colours. For my S/S Collection the colours for this season will be Lime Green, Pastel Yellow, Pastel Blue, Pastel Pink and Grey.

Portfolio Pages..

From the previous post, as promised, here are pictures from my portfolio what I sent to George @ Asda. (Some pieces have been added and edited from what was shown to George)

Meeting With George at Asda..

My tutor had a meeting with George @ Asda on Thursday to discuss Graduate Fashion Week. She asked me if she could take some of my work to show them at this meeting. Straight away i gathered all my boards together, put them in plastic portfolio wallets and caught her just before she was leaving. This was a fantastic opportunity for George to see what I was up to before the event in June.
I caught up with her yesterday to see how it went and her words "they are very keen and will be looking out for you!". AMAZING! I'm soo happy to know my work has been noticed. I was also told they are going global with childrenswear which i am over the moon about and is something i would definitely be up for!

I will upload some images of my presentation boards soon!!

Final Garments & Photoshoot

Its my second day of starting my finals..So far I've used up 5 threads and I haven't even finished a garment yet!! Monday to Wednesday morning I spent laying out my digi print. I'm so excited to see it printed. I'm hoping the colours come out as they appeared on the screen but after that worry is pure excitement! (and a little bit of stress)
Today I met up with my photographer to organise a photoshoot for my collection. I ran through a few ideas with her and we seem to be on the same wave length. I have taken inspiration from a photograph of my mum and my great grandad. The picture is of two photos which were faded together by accident while it was being developed. It looks really spooky but amazing at the same time. Its booked for Saturday 7th May at 9.30am. Due to my collection being about what children wanted to be when they grew up, Im going to use props which are seen as objects in jobs. i.e. fireman's hat, football, racing cars etc. I want to approach this by using vintage props to give it a more interesting look. Here are some images of the sort of props i would like to use...

My nephew Jayden has a Vintage Car and a firemans truck. I reckon if i give him some sweets then he wouldnt mind me borrowing them for my shoot ;)

Re-Designed!

So I've now designed a poncho which i want to be made from a form of plastic, like the coats displayed below. But i cant find the type of plastic i want to use anywhere!! I'm still on the hunt to find this tablecloth type of clear plastic for my poncho. So I'm hoping by a few weeks time ill find it (fingers crossed).
Ive not only added a poncho to my collection but have now changed my girls top and skirt into just a playsuit. I fell in love with the top the minute I constructed it but I just couldn't design a skirt that i liked enough to go with it. So I've re-designed the top to make it into an all in one 3/4 length playsuit. Originally i was going to put my poncho over this but after a inspiration from next.com I found that the girls waistcoat will work better with the playsuit than the dress. Which the poncho will now be used with the dress. As I've changed an outfit around I've also changed the fabric ideas around too. I will construct the playsuit from Digi printed Linen and the dress from the dusty pink Linen from John England. I will draw these ideas on Illustrator to help me visualise the outfits better, which i will then post on here in a few days. Watch this space =)

Fabric Research Trip..

After my stage review my tutor and I decided to add another piece to my collection and we both felt a mac would look great. I wanted to created more of a poncho mac so today I went to London to explore fabrics for the girls poncho. Unfortantly it didnt go well. I couldnt find anything that I really liked. My tutor thought it would be a good idea to make it from a plastic type material which made me thought about using 100% clear polyurethane just like Little Marc Jacobs and Junior Gaultier. Im trying to look for something with a colour tint which you can still see through but suprisingly London wasnt catering for my needs.

Girlswear Shoot in Salisbury

Today I help assist a childrenwear shoot in Salisbury. The house we used for the shoot was BEAUTIFUL. It was beautifully decorated with antique furniture and vintage wallpaper. Every window you looked out of had the most gorgeous views. It was the perfect location for a beautifully detailed girlswear photo shoot. All the outfits worked perfectly with the decor and the two just complimented each other. Claire collected all the outfits from London childrenswear designers such as Hucklebones, Caramel Baby & Child, Marie Chantal and I Love Gorgeous. There were make up artists transforming the little girls hair to something effortless yet chic, with little flowers to give an innocent touch. It was so inspiring being there to see how everyone worked as a team and what it really takes to make a photoshoot fall together. It has influenced me to start thinking about my photoshoot for my collection "When I Grow Up.."

More Laser Cutting..

Today I sneaked into the lazer cutting room to lazer my brand name onto wooden hangers as a way of branding myself. I'm so pleased the way they turned out. I feel they will give my collection and brand a more expensive touch.

Spring at Zara

My newest clothing obsession is Zara. Their children's clothing are like mini adults but still keeping the cute factor because of the child wearing them. Their S/S 2011 collection is by far the cutest I've seen so far. I've already brought myself two pairs of Zara kids shoes from the Spring collection. I need six pairs for my collection so I've written to them in hope they will sponsor me another four pairs! Come on Zara help a poor student out.

Lazer Cutting..

Here are some pictures of my buttons being lazer cut. The picture quality isn't amazing but the buttons have the outline of my characters engraved in the middle..

This is my buttons sampled on a toile of my girls top.

Good Day =)

I was meant to write on here last night but it turns out sewing buttons onto my girls top took longer than expected! Yesterday went really well. I was relieved after the bad week last week. I finished off my boys shirt and coat (even thou the coat needs improvement) and lazer cut some buttons i had designed. I attempted to take some photos on my phone which i will post later on today.

Second Time Lucky..

This is my second time publishing a blog. The first time didn't go too well, but I'm confident this will. I wanted to set my own website up but due to lack of money I'm starting off with a free blog!
For those who don't know me, my names Sarah and I'm a childrenswear designer. I'm currently designing and constructing a collection for boys and girls aged 6-8. My collection is called "When I Grow Up.." Its about what children want to be when they grow up. If you haven't already guessed my brand name is called Sarahsaurus, which is influenced by my nephew Jayden. Hes 6 years old and hes become my inspiration. So far its going well, except last week become a bit stressful and nothing was going right! But the last 2 days everything seems to have picked back up and I'm back to my old self.
Please follow my blog, as this blog will become my diary of my progression and where i can display all my inspirations.
